Feeding Black Hole Blows Cosmic Bubbles

Astronomers have observed the galactic cluster MS0735 located 2.6 billion light-years away and its “radio bubbles” around the black hole.

The mysterious cavities explain why they don’t collapse like a deflated balloon under pressure from their surroundings.

Jack Orlowski-Scherer, a research lead author and McGill University physicist, said they are witnessing one of the most energetic outbursts from a supermassive black hole.

Supermassive black holes are discovered at the center of massive galaxies, including the Milky Way.

This galaxy also has a supermassive black hole named Sagittarius A* at its center.

These galaxies and supermassive black holes are often found together, called galactic clusters.

These clusters are home to atmospheres that fill the space between galaxies with scorching plasma at a temperature of around 50 million degrees Celcius (90 million degrees Fahrenheit).

Later, this plasma can cool over time and collapse to birth new stars, but feeding black holes can work against it.

Supermassive black holes can reheat this gas by dragging some material to its poles near the speed of light.

This process is known as “feedback” and produces the formation of new stars.

The gas around the galactic clusters is pushed away from its center and replaced by bubbles.

The shifting process of these enormous volumes of gas needs massive energy, and astronomers have been trying to understand more.
