On November 22 and 23 this year, more than 9 million student loan forgiveness applicants received an email with a misleading subject line.

The email subject read “Your Student Loan Debt Relief Application Has Been Approved,” indicating that their applications had been approved.

The emails were sent out by a federal contractor working with the Education Department, Accenture Federal Services.

A representative of Accenture Federal Services said that the email subject was a simple case of human error. Besides, new emails will be sent to the 9 million people in the near future.

Despite its confusing subject, the email contained a piece of correct information about the current condition of the student loan forgiveness plan.

It said that all student loan forgiveness applications are being kept, and they will process them once the court business is done.

The Biden-Harris Administration’s plan for student loan debt relief faced several challenges in court.

Six Republican-led states filed suit, saying that the student loan forgiveness plan would hurt state revenue streams.

An 8th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling halted plans on November 14, and all application progress has paused ever since.

The student loan forgiveness application has been removed from StudentAid.gov, too, following its current condition.

The court has scheduled oral arguments in February 2023.
