Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert’s campaign announced on Tuesday she had been diagnosed with an “acute blood clot” caused by May-Thurner Syndrome.

Boebert’s campaign explained she went to the hospital for swelling in her left leg. The campaign also said doctors found an acute blood clot and diagnosed Boebert with May-Thurner Syndrome.

Mostly found in women, it’s a rare vascular condition that can lead to pulmonary embolisms and blood clots. The syndrome is not curable, but it can be safely managed with medication and surgery.

The disorder occurs when an artery pushes up against a vein in the pelvis. This condition will restrict how well the body can circulate blood from the left leg to the heart.

As it progresses, the syndrome can cause varicose veins in the upper portion of the leg, swelling of the leg (typically the left one), and chronic hemorrhoids.
