When local historian PJ Thum met Malaysian prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he was immediately denounced by many people on numerous public platforms as a ‘traitor’. Why? Mahathir has a problematic track record when it comes to his relationship with Singapore. A long-time rival of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, he has crossed swords with us on numerous occasions. For example, he threatened to cut our water supply in 1999, giving an inflammatory speech in Johor Baru (to which the Malaysian crowd responded “Cut! Cut! Cut!”). Disturbingly, this is something he recently threatened to do again. But does this really make PJ Thum a "traitor" for meeting him? If anyone is still unclear why 31 August is actually a significant day in Singapore's history, here's an image of our founding Prime Minister inspecting the parade at the Padang on 31 August 1963. Why 31 August 1963? Because this was the day Lee Kuan Yew declared Singapore independent during the lead up to merger. It was meant to coincide with Merdeka Day as a show of solidarity. He said, "this proclamation today is an assertion of our right to freedom." . . Refer to his speech at this link: http://www.nas.gov.sg/archivesonline/data/pdfdoc/lky19630831.pdf . . We are glad to hear about the government's plans to recommend to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage our 'hawker culture'. Amidst our hunger for progress and our current pace of development, let us not forget the intangible things that make Singapore our home. HDB flats - are you a lessee or an owner? Answer: you own a lease. A lease is valuable. It can be bought and sold. But there is a time limit to it, and one day it will expire. . . . https://consensusg.com/2018/08/17/hdb-owners-vs-tenants-unpacking-the-great-illusion/ . . . 📷: @sonyforher #hdb #singapore #home #housing #singapore🇸🇬 #singaporelife #politics #government #sg #sgp
On ministerial pay and principled politics - “When you raise ministers’ salaries to the point that they’re earning millions of dollars, every minister — no matter how much he wants to turn up and tell Hsien Loong off or whatever — will hesitate when he thinks of his million-dollar salary. Even if he wants to do it, his wife will stop him.” To read more about the potential impact of ministerial pay on the political culture of our country, click the link in our bio. . . . #singapore #politics #sgpolitics #pap #sg 📷: straits times
“Stable and Managed”: Bullying in Singaporean Schools - reports on bullying have revealed that schools with high academic attainment have a lower incidence of bullying. This disparity is consistent across all countries, however, Singapore had one of the larger gaps, second only to France.
